Use it or Lose it (or how I am losing my voice)

Retirement and living in a secluded area in NH with less people interaction, is causing me to lose my voice, literally and figuratively.

This may be due to many factors. Being away from people most of the time. Being mildly depressed. Being agreeable or not voicing any disagreements might also contribute to my voice slowly disappearing.

My online voice is also very faint. I barely blog and then usually, it is a podcast about a book we just listened to.

A few months ago I attended a Social Media event entitled “Sobcon 2012″ and learned during a work session, that everyone should take drama lessons as a way of improving ones voice. When discussing this with Diane, she suggested that I talk into a mirror as a way of getting my voice back.

Regardless of what it takes, I am going to work on getting my actual physical and virtual voice back before I lose it entirely.

My father used to say if you don’t use it, you will lose it. Whatever “it” may be.

Steve, goodness gracious do I understand this topic. I have reached the point that I rarely talk on the phone. Popping over to your other blog now. I bet you enjoy talking about poker more than social media things. ;-)

Miss Dazey, I do like poker but I think that Social Media hits that as well as it does other concerns in life. Rather than liking one aspect of Social Media, I like to think that I live in the Social Media world, and that I run into and have discussions with people of varied interests, like yourself. Thank you for commenting!

Miss Dazey, It is actually me, Steve, replying but I used an email reply which was set up for Diane. Sorry about the identity confusion. :-D

It would be great for the world if Steve did talk more. He has a great sense of humor and he is quick with the puns. He finds and shares the most amazing things on line (with only me it turns out.) Life is interesting.
Mom and Pop has some work to do. I can’t sleep and he can’t talk.

The most amazing thing you could do is talk into a recording device (I have several to give you) and record just whatever thoughts you want to leave for your grandkids to discover when they’re older and more able to consume them. Not about them. About you. About your life. About what your dreams were, where you came from, what you did growing up, what you remember from your childhood.

thats a wonderful idea. I downloaded HT recorder on Mitch Joels advice, and although it can be used for presentations etc. You can actually set it to on, and then have it ignore silence, so esentially if youre sitting alone, not sure when you’ll want to talk, you can let it run. This might be a cool tool for those stories about dreams, and random thoughts :)

This is an incredibly profound post. This is the first time I’ve read your blog (post coming from Steve) although I remember on your brithday, Chris told us about how you were his hero, and so I tweeted you some good wishes. I met Diane at #140confNYC, and unfortunately didn’t get to meet you.

Steve, thank you for sharing this post, it truly is profound, and beautifully written. Something to truly think about on so many levels.

I look forward to hearing about how you find your voice, or rather bring it back. :)
