The story is about Shug Atkins, a 13 year old boy in the Ozarks. His mother Glenda adores him and he idolizes her. His maybe father, Red, mistreats the boy at every turn. It is a story of Shug coming of age. Written in the noir genre, it may not be for everyone. The thing that makes the book unique is the narration. Nicholas Tecosky does an excellent job of making the listener believe he is a troubled 13 year old boy trying to find his way to manhood.
