Size Does Matter

Back at the old house we had a drawer just for knives. It was a perk we enjoyed. At the new house we wanted to create a knife drawer. We soon learned that drawers come in many sizes having both lengths and widths.

The picture above is one of our accomplishments. After disappointing visits to the local stores, we went to Amazon.com and found the almost perfect fit. It was only one inch too wide. The Wusthof In Drawer Knife Block is made in such a way that Steve was able to cut off an inch and then it was perfect. Yay!

Another area where size matters is books. We learned this when we were packing books to move to Vegas. Books come in all kinds of sizes. That makes packing tricky.

Although we gave tons of books away before we moved, we still have more than enough. I say this because size matters again as we place the books on shelves. We don’t have an abundance of shelving space so every inch counts. We still love books, but our little house doesn’t afford us the pleasure of having too many.

Our new neighbors say we have several good libraries in the area. We are also blessed to have Kindle.

Do you still have lots of books in your house?

Got to share this. I told Mr. Bruce you were having a garage sale. He said, “You mean they paid a mover to move stuff that they now are selling?”

I said “it’s hard to figure out what you can use and what you can’t until you actually are in a different place”.
Mr. Bruce, “next time they should ask me, the old freight guy”

Me, “Yeah, remember you’d the one who paid storage for a full year after your Mother passed. You couldn’t throw everything out”

Him, “my freight man head said one thing, my son’s heart said some else.”

We really thought we had downsized, but when we got here reality set in. The house is plenty big enough for the two of us, but we just don’t need all the STUFF we have.

Who needs 24 custard cups. I can’t even remember the last time I made custard. If I was so inclined to make custard now, I would only make six servings probably.

I cleverly replaced my china with Corelle, but I have service for 48. Hello, do you think I have a screw loose or something. No, I was afraid they would stop making my pattern and I would have to replace the whole set. If I had to replace the whole set from wear, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea, but at the time I thought I was saving money.

There is matching glass wear too. Mind you, we can only sit eight at the table, but we have 24 glasses to go with the service of 48. No wonder my children say I am a horder. Maybe I should correct that little defect in myself.

As for planning, hindsight tells us we could have done better. Tell Mr. Bruce we got rushed out of our house. We had wonderful helpers who packed everything. Steve and I didn’t get to make all the decisions. There just wasn’t time. We were on a deadline. And you are absolutely right Miss Dazey, we really didn’t know what could be used in the new place.

Steve took ten boxes of books to the library today. He said the nice lady was very happy to receive them. He was pleased. I am happy. It all works out.

I am in the same boat when it comes to needing more space for books. I gave away many!

Still wanting to give away a few more.

Glad you guys are settling in!
