Alex Cross, Run – A Book Review

Alex Cross is on another case where young women and young men are being murdered. Is it one killer or many killers? There are common denominators, but why are these people being singled out?

As if Alex Cross doesn’t have enough problems trying to figure out “who done it,” Ron Guidice turns up at every scene and badgers Alex Cross until Alex losses his temper. Then Alex is in trouble.

Throw in problems at home and Alex and Brie have a plethora of questions that need answers.

It is a fast paced book with the Alex Cross charm we all love.

We hope you enjoy the book as much as we did.

Use it or Lose it (or how I am losing my voice)

V is for...

V is for… (Photo credit: JD’na)

Retirement and living in a secluded area in NH with less people interaction, is causing me to lose my voice, literally and figuratively.

This may be due to many factors. Being away from people most of the time. Being mildly depressed. Being agreeable or not voicing any disagreements might also contribute to my voice slowly disappearing.

My online voice is also very faint. I barely blog and then usually, it is a podcast about a book we just listened to.

A few months ago I attended a Social Media event entitled “Sobcon 2012″ and learned during a work session, that everyone should take drama lessons as a way of improving ones voice. When discussing this with Diane, she suggested that I talk into a mirror as a way of getting my voice back.

Regardless of what it takes, I am going to work on getting my actual physical and virtual voice back before I lose it entirely.

My father used to say if you don’t use it, you will lose it. Whatever “it” may be.

Pop pops his cell phone … again.

Last Sunday evening, Diane and I do what we always do for an evening of free poker. We drive to Manchester NH to the City Sports Grille located on 216 Maple Street.

We play free bar poker sponsored by City Sports and run by TavernTainmenT. This weekly event draws more than 45+ serious people to play No Limit HoldEm tournaments. There are two sessions, the first starting at 5 pm and the second around 7:30 pm, depending on if the first session has completed.

Player experience runs from total newbies to extremely skilled. Usually someone volunteers to deal at each table. There are usually five and sometimes six tables filled with poker players, young and old, male and female. For the most part, the tables are cordial and fun (at least at my table, where I am dealing; fun people come to my table even though the seating is random).

The only costs that the players have are those for buying drinks, snacks and meals from the City Sports Grille. It is a win win for the bar and for TavernTainmenT.

That being said, the costs at the City Sports Grille are not extremely expensive. Except last Sunday night. For me personally.

I forgot to charge my cell phone and before the evening was out, my phone shut off due to the battery running down. I placed my dead phone in my back pocket and forgot about it. Later, while in the restroom, I some how managed to drop my phone into a body of water (Don’t ask!).

Needless to say, the phone did not survive. Luckily, I had insurance so the total cost to me to replace it, was $90 plus my annual premiums of $96 a year. This is the second time that I used it this year, so I am ahead. If I had to pay for the phone itself, out of pocket would be about $600, so the insurance is a good thing. I now have to be extremely careful as I have used up my entire benefit for the year.

My Adventures with the VerizonWireless Motorola RAZR – continued

Image representing Droid as depicted in CrunchBase

Image via CrunchBase

Less than four months ago, I reported on how I managed to slam a practically indestructible RAZR into my car door and the steps it took to replace it. I use my phone every day so the time it took, two days, seemed like an eternity.

Well I did it again. I took a perfectly good phone and then managed to drop it in a body of water. The phone was powered off at the time. I had let the battery die. The only complaint I have about the Motorola RAZR is the short battery life. To be honest, I use so many apps I know I am the cause for the short battery life.

Well, this time I knew what to do. I contacted VerizonWireless to re-activate my trusty Droid X. At least now I have a workable phone until my replacement arrives.

I then contacted Asurion Insurance to order a replacement phone. I got almost 80% through the online form when I miss-clicked (same as dropping a phone in water, I guess). This resulted in me having to contact Asurion by phone in order to talk to their verification department, oh oh…

I called the number they gave me and a representative answered and we went through the details all over again of the info I entered in my 80% completed online claim form.

She then informs me that I have to talk to someone from the verification department. But … that office is not open for another hour, so please call back then. You would think that the online contact form would have given their hours of operation. Oh well.

Hopefully, I will have the phone in time for #SobCon 2012. This post might even become part of the discussion. Who knows.

Maybe, I’ll try harder to protect this replacement. New case? Less use? Or perhaps I should pay more attention? You think?

An uneventful evening …

Official seal of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire

For the past four months I have been working regularly on Friday’s and Saturday’s from 3:00 pm on, at The Poker Room NH in Hampton Falls NH.

My first time dealing poker as a professional started on January 3, 2012, this year.

I am probably their least experienced and least capable dealer but I am trying to improve each day that I go to work.

Currently, I am only dealing Texas Hold’Em:  cash, tourneys. and “sit n go’s”. I soon hope to be dealing Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud Hi/Lo.

Each time I sit down at a table to deal, I never know what is going to happen. Sometimes the cards I deal out are very interesting.  Sometimes I make little mistakes that can irritate the players and slow down the games.  Some players are more understanding than others.  But I have no problem dealing with complaints and accepting them, when I am at fault or not.

Each day that I work, I have as a goal to have one perfect session, where nothing goes wrong.  Even our best dealers make mistakes from time to time and I hope to become more like them.

On the plus side, I am one of three dealers, so far,  at The Poker Room NH that has dealt out a “bad beat” that has resulted in players winning hundreds of dollars, so most players are  happy to see me coming to their table.

Last night I worked from 5:20 pm to 10:00 pm. I did not even start dealing until 6:30 pm as I was at a table waiting for more players to enter our 5:30 pm tourney. We had set up six tables but ended up filling only four.  When it was my turn to go to an active table and to deal, I was able to do so and I dealt with the minimum of problems.

About my biggest challenge was when the antes kicked in.  Antes are small amounts that every player must put into the pot in addition to the big blind and the small blind.

So after I am done my shuffling of cards and before cutting the deck and dealing cards, I must collect the antes and make sure that the blinds are posted. That adds an additional 20 to 60 seconds to each hand being dealt, depending on if I have to ask for the antes and if I have to make change etc.

For the first night since I have been there, I had a practically perfect night dealing. But I must not rest on my laurels, as I know I need to improve in counting bets, chips, side pots, etc.

Still, I did feel good and went home in high spirits.

Bad Santa?

Dealing poker at our local poker room, The Poker Room NH, can become very interesting at times.

I work two days a week, Friday and Saturday, and I get to see many people coming to play at our tables.

I deal at the tournament tables and also at the cash Limit Hold’Em tables.
The cost to play at the $2/4 limit table is a buy-in of $20 minimum.

Some of the players that I see are regulars and most of them know how to play. Occasionally we do get new players that have never played a limit hold’em cash game.

There is a certain basic strategy that good players follow. Good players do not play in every single hand unless they have very good cards.

New players however may not understand or know that concept and think that every hand that they see is an opportunity to win a pot.

Recently three young ladies have been becoming regulars at the cash tables and I have dealt to them when I have been assigned to their tables.

English is not their native language, but they speak it rather well. I don’t know if these three ladies are related or not but the younger one smiles when she sees me coming to the table and says “Welcome Santa, I know you will be kind to me”.

Now my basic task is to try and make their experience enjoyable, but I am only able to guarantee that everyone at the table gets two cards each. Beyond that, it is the players responsibility to do what they can with these cards to win the pots.

The problem that I see with the young lady who calls me “Santa” is that she plays every single hand that she is dealt regardless of what they are.  To her sorrow and dismay, she usually finds that she has lost all of her chips within an hours time. And she usually buys a hundred dollars of poker chips at a time.

I am not always at the same table for long periods of time because we are moved from table to table every 30 minutes or so, and I do not see when she ends up re-buying more chips so I do not know how she is doing.

One evening however, I did end up dealing to these ladies twice in the same evening, although at a different table.

The story was the same. Big smile and a “Welcome Santa”, but at the end of the session, with her chips all gone, she looked at me sadly and said “Bad Santa”.

You know how it goes … you cannot please everyone …

A Thank You Note to Diane

Gadgets on a table with lamp 12-2004

A Valentine’s gift from my lovely Diane.

As we approach almost 45 years of marriage, it does become harder and harder to get gifts for each other. Especially since we both have everything we could possibly want.

But when it comes to gadgets, I am always looking for a newer, better one.

I like to listen to podcasts without annoying others or having to wear heavy or awkward Bluetooth headgear.

I found a Sony Ericsson Hi-Fi Bluetooth Stereo Headset with FM Radio that seemed to fit what I was looking for and Diane got it for me for Valentine’s day.

Like all wireless devices, you must first charge it up for at least eight hours.  Done.

This device paired up with my phone in less than two minutes. Done.

The FM Radio works mostly with local FM stations. Nice.

I am now able to listen to my podcasts on my Motorola RAZR without connecting it directly to my phone. Did I say how I broke my first RAZR by slamming it in my car door because I had the car charger hooked into one connection and an ear bud hooked into the audio out connection?

Now when my phone runs out of battery (I never seem to leave it in a charger long enough or I try to use it more than it wants to be used) I listen to FM Radio until I recharge my phone. Soon I will be carrying an external battery whenever it is convenient to do so.

Thank you, Diane, for the lovely and useful Valentine gift.

Love,

Steve

Poker Dealer Update

I am into my third week of dealing at “The Poker Room NH” and I am finding it a challenging yet rewarding profession.

What I find most enjoyable are the people that I meet at my table. For the most part, they are serious but have a sense of humor. Exacting, but they have a tolerance for a new dealer. What has been most gratifying has been their responses when they see me leaving for the day or when the see me playing at the tables on my days off.

Some of them look forward to seeing me while there are a few that might groan to see me coming.

The ones that groan might have been the victims of mistakes that I made when dealing to them. I am not perfect but I am striving to get better every day that I deal at the poker tables.

I make no excuses for my mistakes but admit to what I have done and apologize for any inconvenience it might have caused them.

When I sat down recently to play some poker, some of the players recognized me and asked how my dealing was coming along. I said I was improving but that I needed to speed up my dealing.  Three of the players immediately told me that I was doing fine and not to worry about my speed.  I thanked them then sat down to be a player for a couple of hours.

Poker is an activity that I really enjoy and I get pleasure from either playing or dealing. It is nice to have a job that pays you to do something that you love you to do!
