Life Is A Journey

LIfe is hard, but you have to keep moving. Your parent, best friend, lover, (fill in the blank) walked out on you and you are all alone. You lost your job. You are homeless. You have reached the lowest point in your life. For just one terrible moment, think of a point in your life when you thought that you just could not go any further. Have you ever thought that you and the world in general would be better if you just ended your life and be done with the battle of living? All of us have probably had any of all of these thoughts at some point in our lives. Truthfully speaking, not every day is perfect, but I always have hope for a better tomorrow.

Life force is defined as: The spirit or energy that animates living creatures; the soul. With this energy we can do something. We can always do something to help someone. Inspiration can be more valuable than gold. You could say inspiration is used to attain gold. Think about it.

“Time to make the donuts.” was a rather popular saying. We saw the sleepy baker shuffle off to work in the morning to make the donuts for the workers who would shuffle by a short while later on their way to work. They worked all day, went home at night and started the next day all over again. Sometimes life can get boring. Sometimes you have to look for the bright spot in life. Sometimes that bright spot is a sunrise, a smile, a cartoon or the hope for a better tomorrow. No matter how sad, lonely, or downtrodden I have felt I can always find something to be thankful for. I am not in a wheel chair. I have all my body parts. I can walk. I can talk. I have a lot to be thankful for.

So many songs have just the right words like: “Make someone happy, Make just one someone happy.” It may only be a smile or a hello that does the trick. You never know what is needed to make another person feel alive and part of the scene. Enjoy the magic that is your life.

Mom Pop Pow – Where You Can Do It If You Try

Do You Know The Correct Answer?

We can find the solution if we all work together

Fact: Obesity is a problem in America.

Fact: Obesity causes many medical problems.

Fact: No one person or group knows how to solve the problem.

Last night was the second Twitter chat #Ashamed. The purpose of the chat is to have Strong4Life remove the Georgia billboards showing overweight children. Strong4Life believes in the “Shock” factor. They are trying to “wake up the parents.”

There is a lot of support for this effort. There were more than 43 million impressions in one hour. Probably every grown woman and many men has had some type of weight problem growing up. In most cases they have unpleasant memories. Obesity needs to be addressed as the problem. The person is not the problem. The 21:47 minute video below has a lot of helpful information. I urge you to view it and share it.

In today’s world obesity has been multiplied for many reasons, food changes, food additives, lack of activity, etc. The problem is not just in Georgia, it is everywhere. It is easy to quickly come up with ten reasons why our country has a problem with obesity. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix. There is no one right answer.

The Solution

Do something – Smile.

Do just one thing – Move – Dance – Bend Over – Raise Your Knee – Walk.

Don’t judge – Say hi to the overweight person – the skinny person – the different person.

Teach – How to read a food label.

Learn – what the words on the food label mean.

Start – a neighborhood project.

Organize – an event.

Be kind.

YOU are a very powerful person.

#Ashamed – Who Should Be Ashamed?

She’s Beautiful

I am joining the #Ashamed Twitter chat tonight, 2-16-12, at 9PM EST. Honestly speaking, I am ashamed there is such a chat. I am ashamed this type of behavior is happening. I am ashamed that our children, the ones we are sworn to love and cherish, the ones we are sworn to protect, are subjected to the pain of living in such a cruel world.

The #Ashamed chat started as a result of the billboard shown above. It shows a little girl who is termed obese. The challenge is to remove these hurtful billboards. The goal is to fight obesity, not obese people.

I visited the website who I believe is responsible for the billboards. Short upbeat videos address the problem. I was impressed with Dr. Mark Wulkan of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta who said the solution to the obesity epidemic is for everyone who comes in contact with the kids. That was the only realistic part. I’m sure they mean well. had the whole story along with a video showing what children experience every day at home and at school. Some of the key points I lifted from the Yale University video are:

People living with weight bias experience:

• Lonliness
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Low Self Esteem
• Poor Body Image
• Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior

What you can do:

• Be aware
• Educate yourself
• Avoid fat talk
• Intervene
• Include positive Role models
• Be sensitive
• Advocate weight tolerance

If you don’t have time for any of this, take time to watch the video. I found the most direct link to be at The title is Weight Bias at Home and School. We could also retitle it to be Weight Bias at Home, School, Work and Social situations. Smile, we can solve this problem together.
