The Joy of Grandchildren

On Sunday, Harold and Violette came to our house for lunch. Violette brought her new doll and showed me how she could stand up in many different poses. Violette posed her and I took pictures. Then Harold chimed in and showed me how he could make faces that would equal the doll poses. Actually, Harold is much cuter than the doll, but I didn’t point that out to Violette.

I became so involved with Violettte and Harold, I didn’t really notice Steve and Chris placing the food on the table. Fortunately, Steve and I had lunch prepared before they arrived so it was ready to be served. It was funny to hear Steve say, “Gramma, lunch is ready, please come to the table NOW please dear.”

Today is Wednesday and we waiting for Cindy to arrive. She is an only child and has no problem pointing out that fact. We love to talk with her because we never know what she is going to say. All of our grandchildren are delightful and we love spending time with them.

We live in New Hampshire. The weather forecast predicted 6 to 8 inches of snow for today. We suggested Cindy bring her snow clothes and PJs incase we get snowed in. Now when snow should be falling there is nothing but sun and clear skies with a chance of snow later in the day.

Maybe we will go to the mall and the pet store. That is always an adventure. Cindy examines everything and shares comments. Sometimes I think Steve and I have more fun than Cindy. Maybe we will lunch at a restaurant of her choice. Last time it was McDonalds. Cindy can convince one that chicken Mcnuggets and french fries are gourmet food.

Got to go now, Cindy will be here soon. Have a great day.

Forbidden – A Book Review

Forbidden is a look into the future 480 years from now. In addition to the story line, we get to take in the scenery, the clothing, and the setting. There seems to be a lack of technology, but not really, because they have highly developed medical technology. This is a most interesting book.

Is there a feline in the house?

Sometimes, it is hard to amuse our two almost three year old cats.

But a child’s toy tent seems to do the trick!

Please enjoy the antics of Spade and Diamond!

My Poker Dealing Sweetheart

When Steve and I were first married the Beatles were at the top of the music charts. We used to sing “WHEN I’M SIXY FOUR” to each other

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I’d been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I’m sixty-four.

Now that time has come. Fortunately we still have our hair and we have not deteriorated into nothingness. Quite the contrary in fact.

Steve has started a new career as a poker dealer. He is so happy. He says dealing gives him the same enjoyment as playing poker, sometimes even more because he doesn’t loose any money. He gets to socialize with folks who love the game of poker. He remembers the hands and the intricacies of the play. There is a lot of skill involved when playing poker. Stats are involved. Luck is a factor. Maybe the biggest component is the ability to read the other players at the table.

When Steve talks about poker he shines. His face lights up. He smiles. His whole body becomes animated. He gets excited. Sometimes he even talks a little loud as he retells a really exciting story of how a player won a hand.

As his cheerleader, I admire Steve for pursuing his goal of being part of the poker world. I love to hear his stories and I am glad he is enjoying this new chapter in his life. He seems to be getting younger.

Have you ever tried something totally different? How did it work out for you?

Life Is A Journey

LIfe is hard, but you have to keep moving. Your parent, best friend, lover, (fill in the blank) walked out on you and you are all alone. You lost your job. You are homeless. You have reached the lowest point in your life. For just one terrible moment, think of a point in your life when you thought that you just could not go any further. Have you ever thought that you and the world in general would be better if you just ended your life and be done with the battle of living? All of us have probably had any of all of these thoughts at some point in our lives. Truthfully speaking, not every day is perfect, but I always have hope for a better tomorrow.

Life force is defined as: The spirit or energy that animates living creatures; the soul. With this energy we can do something. We can always do something to help someone. Inspiration can be more valuable than gold. You could say inspiration is used to attain gold. Think about it.

“Time to make the donuts.” was a rather popular saying. We saw the sleepy baker shuffle off to work in the morning to make the donuts for the workers who would shuffle by a short while later on their way to work. They worked all day, went home at night and started the next day all over again. Sometimes life can get boring. Sometimes you have to look for the bright spot in life. Sometimes that bright spot is a sunrise, a smile, a cartoon or the hope for a better tomorrow. No matter how sad, lonely, or downtrodden I have felt I can always find something to be thankful for. I am not in a wheel chair. I have all my body parts. I can walk. I can talk. I have a lot to be thankful for.

So many songs have just the right words like: “Make someone happy, Make just one someone happy.” It may only be a smile or a hello that does the trick. You never know what is needed to make another person feel alive and part of the scene. Enjoy the magic that is your life.

Do You Know The Correct Answer?

We can find the solution if we all work together

Fact: Obesity is a problem in America.

Fact: Obesity causes many medical problems.

Fact: No one person or group knows how to solve the problem.

Last night was the second Twitter chat #Ashamed. The purpose of the chat is to have Strong4Life remove the Georgia billboards showing overweight children. Strong4Life believes in the “Shock” factor. They are trying to “wake up the parents.”

There is a lot of support for this effort. There were more than 43 million impressions in one hour. Probably every grown woman and many men has had some type of weight problem growing up. In most cases they have unpleasant memories. Obesity needs to be addressed as the problem. The person is not the problem. The 21:47 minute video below has a lot of helpful information. I urge you to view it and share it.

In today’s world obesity has been multiplied for many reasons, food changes, food additives, lack of activity, etc. The problem is not just in Georgia, it is everywhere. It is easy to quickly come up with ten reasons why our country has a problem with obesity. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix. There is no one right answer.

The Solution

Do something – Smile.

Do just one thing – Move – Dance – Bend Over – Raise Your Knee – Walk.

Don’t judge – Say hi to the overweight person – the skinny person – the different person.

Teach – How to read a food label.

Learn – what the words on the food label mean.

Start – a neighborhood project.

Organize – an event.

Be kind.

YOU are a very powerful person.

#Ashamed – Who Should Be Ashamed?

She’s Beautiful

HUGS

I am joining the #Ashamed Twitter chat tonight, 2-16-12, at 9PM EST. Honestly speaking, I am ashamed there is such a chat. I am ashamed this type of behavior is happening. I am ashamed that our children, the ones we are sworn to love and cherish, the ones we are sworn to protect, are subjected to the pain of living in such a cruel world.

The #Ashamed chat started as a result of the billboard shown above. It shows a little girl who is termed obese. The challenge is to remove these hurtful billboards. The goal is to fight obesity, not obese people.

I visited the strong4life.com website who I believe is responsible for the billboards. Short upbeat videos address the problem. I was impressed with Dr. Mark Wulkan of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta who said the solution to the obesity epidemic is for everyone who comes in contact with the kids. That was the only realistic part. I’m sure they mean well.

Mamavation.com had the whole story along with a video showing what children experience every day at home and at school. Some of the key points I lifted from the Yale University video are:

People living with weight bias experience:

• Lonliness
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Low Self Esteem
• Poor Body Image
• Suicidal Thoughts and Behavior

What you can do:

• Be aware
• Educate yourself
• Avoid fat talk
• Intervene
• Include positive Role models
• Be sensitive
• Advocate weight tolerance

Learn more at www.yaleruddcenter.org They have so much great information.

Join the Twitter chat 2-16-12 at 9PM EST #Ashamed.

If you don’t have time for any of this, take time to watch the video. I found the most direct link to be at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxzejNE0RT8 The title is Weight Bias at Home and School. We could also retitle it to be Weight Bias at Home, School, Work and Social situations. Smile, we can solve this problem together.

A Thank You Note to Diane

Gadgets on a table with lamp 12-2004

Image via Wikipedia

A Valentine’s gift from my lovely Diane.

As we approach almost 45 years of marriage, it does become harder and harder to get gifts for each other. Especially since we both have everything we could possibly want.

But when it comes to gadgets, I am always looking for a newer, better one.

I like to listen to podcasts without annoying others or having to wear heavy or awkward Bluetooth headgear.

I found a Sony Ericsson Hi-Fi Bluetooth Stereo Headset with FM Radio that seemed to fit what I was looking for and Diane got it for me for Valentine’s day.

Like all wireless devices, you must first charge it up for at least eight hours.  Done.

This device paired up with my phone in less than two minutes. Done.

The FM Radio works mostly with local FM stations. Nice.

I am now able to listen to my podcasts on my Motorola RAZR without connecting it directly to my phone. Did I say how I broke my first RAZR by slamming it in my car door because I had the car charger hooked into one connection and an ear bud hooked into the audio out connection?

Now when my phone runs out of battery (I never seem to leave it in a charger long enough or I try to use it more than it wants to be used) I listen to FM Radio until I recharge my phone. Soon I will be carrying an external battery whenever it is convenient to do so.

Thank you, Diane, for the lovely and useful Valentine gift.

Love,

Steve
