Cat Curiosity

When we have packages delivered to our house, our Diamond cat is so curious. He can’t wait for us to open them, he has to get right in there and help more the process along. As you will see in the video, he worked so hard on this one, he laid down after he got this one opened. We sure are lucky to have him.

Helga painted by Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth painted Helga Testorf from 1971 to 1985. It is a great collection of work on one subject. I was surprised at how many studies he would do of a subject before actually creating a painting. The book presented in the video and shown in our affliate link below contain the studies as well as the actual paintings. I was amazed that Asleep would have so many studies, yet never actually turn into a painting. The work is beautiful and Helga Testorf was a perfect model. The world is blessed to have these great pictures created by a thoughtful caring artist.

Learning to Deal – a beginning

Poker Texas Hold'em: Shuffling Cards

Today I start my training program to become a licensed dealer in New Hampshire. I have already purchased an on-line dealer training course from Dealer-Training.com (not an affiliate). I am awaiting my dealer table top cover to help make the training more realistic.

Who knew that dealing cards would take so much knowledge. You have to learn how to spread the deck, scramble the deck, riffle the cards, box the cards, cut the cards and finally, deal the cards.

There are ten chapters in the book and I have already read four of them. There are countess videos and still pictures giving me even more information about what I am supposed to do as a dealer.

I have six more chapters to go so there is  much more for me to do and learn. A great part of what comes next is practice, practice, practice.

Whenever I have played live poker, I have always appreciated the dealer who was professional, accurate and quick. Now I am trying to be that person.

As I mentioned before, I think that by becoming a dealer. I will improve my poker playing ability. And as a dealer, I get paid regardless of who wins or loses. Of course the better I deal, the better the chances I have of being tipped for my excellent service.

Earrings – Does color make a difference?

Excuses are the last thing anyone ever wants to hear. So I am not offering you an excuse, just the facts. I had a great Monday planned. That included putting the finishing touches on this post about these earrings. I wanted to talk about color, simplicity of style, size, form and how they all work together. Then the migraine struck. I spent the day decommissioned.

Thanks to Steve you have a picture of the earrings. I’ve heard that a picture is worth a thousand words so let’s hope it works today.

Bloodline – A book review

Bloodline by Mark Billingham is set in England. People are being murdered. The initial connection between the murders is a small piece of x-ray film in their hand. As more murders happen, an even stronger connection is discovered. The killer and the ending is a big surprise. The book is read by Paul Thornley in an English accent using colloquial language which adds to the enjoyment.

Cat toys

Our cats, Spade and Diamond, get into everything. When it is their time to make a Feline Friday video – they lay down for a nap. This time, we enlisted the help of a cat toy to get them moving. That worked for about a minute and a half. Do you think we have lazy cats?

Victoria Wyeth talks to us about the art of Andrew Wyeth

This is more about our tour with Victoria Wyeth as she tells us about the work of her grandfather Andrew Wyeth. He was a great American artist.

Correction: When I talked about “A Feather in Her Cap” I mistakenly said Betsy, instead of Victoria said. Betsy was Andrew’s wife and the hat belonged to Betsy.

Passion for Poker – employment opportunities

A dealer button or "buck" next to a ...

Image via Wikipedia

Since 2005, I have wanted to become proficient enough in playing poker to make it a career. But given the amount of bankroll needed to make this happen and the fact that I am still not a winning player, this desire is not feasible in the near future.

But, I might be able to do something else while I build up my poker playing skills and my bankroll. I might become a poker dealer.

The reason why I say this is because I have analyzed some of the numbers of dealers required and have noticed that most poker rooms do not always have enough dealers available. Sometimes this is caused by the large number of tournaments running at the same time at the poker room.

With over eight poker rooms located within 60 miles of me having a total of 188 tables, it would appear that the need for dealers is growing.  Not to mention that Massachusetts has passed a bill that would allow three large casinos to be built in the next few years.  With one casino to  be located near to where I live, the opportunities for employment as a dealer will increase.

The following is a  list of the poker rooms that are within 60 miles from my home. Any of these would be ideal to work at as a dealer. Some better than others, I am sure.

They are as follows:

The Poker Room
1 Lafayette Road
Hampton Falls, NH 03844
24 Tables

The Poker Room at Seabrook Park
319 New Zealand Road
Seabrook, New Hampshire
03874-4119
56 poker tables

The River Card Room
185 Elm Street
Milford, NH 03055
25 poker tables

Rockingham Park Race Track Poker Room
Rockingham Park Boulevard, Salem, NH 03079
30 poker tables

Manchester Poker Room
165 John E Divine Dr.
Manchester, NH 03103
18 poker tables

Lodge at Belmont Poker Room
1265 Laconia Rd.
Belmont, NH 03220
10 poker tables

Dover Poker Room
887b Central Avenue
Dover, NH 3820
15 poker tables

Atlantic Poker Room
50 North Main Street
Rochester, NH 03839
4 tables

My newest challenge is to become a trained poker dealer.  Currently there are no schools near enough to me to go for live training, so I will try online training first. Then I will audition for the position of dealer. When I pass my audition, I will seek local employment at some of the poker rooms nearest to me.

I believe that as a dealer, I will be able to increase my poker learning by observation.  This would be far less costly then learning by playing and losing.

By watching others play, I hope to learn to play poker better.  There are many sucessful professional poker players today that started out as a dealer, so I am not entering untested grounds.

All of this is in the pursuit of my passion for poker.

Mark Horvath is HardlyNormal

Mark Horvath, also known as @hardlynormal, and @invisablepeople.tv is someone we have followed on Twitter for a couple years or so. He does great work and he shares the stories of the homeless people he helps. We especially like him because he is so human and sensitive to people. Sometimes Pop Tarts are the best food choice because they feed the soul as well as the body.

You can follow someone on line and see them on video and TV, but it is never the same as meeting them in person. Yesterday we had the great pleasure of having lunch with Mark. He has so much passion for the homeless people. He really cares about the homeless. He is knowledgeable about government programs. He knows what is happening in many areas of the country. At a couple times during our conversation with Mark, we wished that he could be preaching to all government officials, and all people everywhere. We have to cure homelessness together. America is in crisis and Americans have to cure it.

Mark Horvath doesn’t preach though. He speaks softly with passion that ignites my desire to help. He truly is a man on a mission. We could go on and on but you can judge for yourselves by going to invisiblepeople.tv or HardlyNormal.com. Follow Mark on Twitter.com as @HardlyNormal.

Check out Charles Taggart’s blog post about Mark by following the link below.

Making a difference- Mark Horvath of InvisiblePeople.tv is a Hero for all!
