Country Living with Electronics

Multiple TV antenna setup

Image via Wikipedia

We live in the country. We are grateful when we have internet access. We are happy when we have television reception. We are happy when we have electrical service. We don’t take anything for granted.

Diane:  I use computer applications. I am not really sure how they work. Steve configures them and they just work.

Steve:  I do the network administration. I set up the routers. I reboot the network access points and reload the DNS (domain naming service, the thing that makes www.mompoppow.com work when you type it in your browser.

Problem: When we have rain or when we go away for a few days, the electronics, specifically the internet, does not work in our house until Steve works his magic. Many people who know Steve would agree with me that it is magic. I, Diane, turn on the switch thingy and it does not work. Steve comes along and does the exact same thing and it works. Wouldn’t you call that magic. (When it does not work, we call it a PITA). Even the MiFi refused to work today.  Electronically speaking, it was not a good day.

With a little patience, Steve will have everything humming again and all will be well again.

Safe at Home

MANASQUAN, NJ - AUGUST 29: A tree brought dow...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

The travel plans were to go from New Jersey to New Hampshire. The reality was that many downed trees or flooded sections of roads caused detours. The detours made our trip longer. Power outages caused stores to be closed. Bathrooms were a problem. When one was available, there were long lines. The amazing thing was that people helped each other by sharing information from smart phones or general information they had. Everyone was very friendly.

Having twitter along for the ride makes the experience a lot more interesting.

God Bless all of you. We hope Hurricane Irene did not damage you too much.

Gluten Free Love

Baking gluten free requires a lot of ingredients that one does not normally use. For instance, instead of using a cup of flour, you may have to use four or more flours to make the gluten free flour required for a recipe. It is easy to spend a lot of money to do the basic gluten free set up. Fortunately, there are many packaged mixes, such as pancake and waffle mix; biscuit mix; brownie mix; chocolate cake mix; etc. On our way to Pennsylvania we stopped at my brother’s place for one night. He had made two kinds of bread and biscuits. One bread was divine. One bread was hard as a brick and sort of tasted brick like too. The biscuits were heavenly.

When we returned for the weekend, my brother had lots of perfect bread and biscuits. He also had perfect steak, perfect spare ribs, perfect waffles, perfect turkey, perfect everything there was to eat.

Steve and I shared the hurricane Irene weekend in New Jersey with my brother Gene, his wife Judy and our niece Melody. We had fun, laughed a lot and ate way too much.

We talked about how different our hurricane experience was this time. Using our smart phones we had news and contact with the rest of the world. The hurricane knocked out the power, my brother experienced some flooding, and the roads were closed – BUT – just knowing what was going on in the world made the experience more tolerable.

We hope you are safe and did not sustain damage. We hope you were fortunate enough to have lots of food to eat – especially food that was made with lots of love.

Andrew Wyeth and Victoria Wyeth

Dawn had barely broken and I was wide awake. Today we were going to the Brandywine River Museum with our gracious hostess Whitney Hoffman. We would see the art of N. C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth.

More fantastical than that, we were going to have a private tour with Andrew Wyeth’s granddaughter Victoria Wyeth. I had made the arrangements over the phone and she sounded exciting. The emotions flowing through my body were beyond excitement. Every fiber of my being was tingling like cymbals sounding; like fireworks; like the anticipation of the 1812 overture at the Boston Pops fourth of July celebration; like the thrill of a roller coaster ride. The day was going to be magical.

In my opinion, Andrew Wyeth is not as well known as he should be. He was brilliant. His work is unmatched. His body of work is phenomenal.

Now at the end of the day I am happy to report that the day was truly magical. Victoria Wyeth is amazing. Talking with a family member who knew Andrew Wyeth was so cool. She told about Halloween at the Wyeth house as being a really fun time. She told us about “Andy” coming to the museum when she was giving a tour and misbehaving – such as touching the paintings which is an absolute no no.

She told us about her relationship with her grandfather Andy and some of his painting. She told us about “Stop” which is a man on a Harley Davidson motor cycle waiting at a stop light. Andy had been trying to paint a picture like that for a while, but just couldn’t get it right. Then a man stopped right in front of him and he saw the angle he needed. Andy immediately called his friend Adam Bell to pose for him and painted the picture “Stop.” Victoria brought Adam Bell to the tour for us to meet.

Victoria is knowledgeable, kind, funny, wonderful and the very best representative Andrew Wyeth could ever wish to have. I hope that she will create videos of her tours for future generations. She has so much knowledge about the American master Andrew Wyeth. Victoria Wyeth is an American treasure just like her grandfather.

Earthquake – All is Well

To the best of our knowledge, no one was hurt in the Eastern seaboard earthquake of yesterday. We are very thankful that everyone is OK. Since all is well, we are going to continue on our vacation. We will tell you more about it soon.

Have a great day.

Meeting Tweple Face to Face

We have been tweeting back and forth with Suzanne Vara for quite some time now. Today we had the very great pleasure of meeting Suzanne in real life. She is bright, beautiful, fun, energetic and just a nice person.

So why is this a big deal you ask? Well the big deal is that we met Suzanne on Twitter. We developed a relationship on Twitter. We made arrangements to meet her using Twitter.

Social Media tools like Twitter don’t make a person better or more outstanding, but it is easier to connect. Sending pics, links, and words of inspiration make the world a better place.

Every day we say good morning to our friends and enjoy the sunrise with Liz Strauss. Our life is a lot more interesting with Twitter and other forms of Social Media. We hope you are enjoying this fingertip technology.

Rugged Costal Beauty

There is something mystical about the coast. It is always changing. With the combination of sun, clounds, wind, rain, snow and all the other elements, it is always different. On days like today, everything comes together to form a perfect day. Enjoy.

Pop Talks Poker

The poker tables in the Trump Taj Mahal

Image via Wikipedia

Currently online poker is in a state of flux for US players. Even those few remaining sites that allow US players seem to have second thoughts about it. BoDog.eu, a US player friendly site, announced recently that they were withdrawing from the US at the end of the year.

On the Merge Network of poker sites, which allowed US players, there was a temporary moratorium for new players. This means that only the current US players are allowed to play. However, US players could not make deposits or withdrawals during that period. Currently, that moratorium has been lifted.

I currently play on three sites:
BlackChipPoker.com, which is a “skin” on the Merge Network. The Merge Network has dozens of “skins” or affiliate sites, including CarbonPoker, as well.

LuvinPoker.com, is where my friends from Railbirds.com play their tournaments.

ClubWPT.com, my remaining poker affiliate, allows you to play for a monthly subscription. On ClubWPT you can play for cash and prizes. There are even satellites into WPT (World Poker Tour) events and Boot Camps.

Such is the current state of online poker in the US. Many players used to earn a living or supplement their earnings by playing online poker. That is no longer the case. You need be willing to lose cash in the event the site is shut down or they stop allowing US players.

Oh, and a major problem with the remaining site, is the ability to make a deposit or withdraw your winnings. That is an even more difficult task. The US government, particularly the Department of Justice (DOJ) has made it almost impossible to pay to play on the few remaining sites that allow US players.

If you like to play online poker, contact your Representatives in Congress and let them know how you feel. Maybe in a few years, we will be back to where we were when there were hundreds of thousands of players online at any given time.

Check out organizations like the Poker Players Alliance and/or Fair Play USA to see what you can do to help change the current situation.

Making online poker legal and accessible to US players can help generate tax revenue for the US by taxing both the players and the sites. It could be a WIN WIN for the players and for the government.
