The Priest’s Graveyard – A book review

Ted Dekker has become one of our must read authors. The Priest’s Graveyard by Ted Dekker is one reason for this decision. The book is full of suspense and intrigue. It is fast paced and involving. It is an interesting, thought provoking story. We hope you enjoy this book as much as we did.

Envy or Admiration

I don’t know if it is envy, or admiration, but I want to be like them. Them being the people who write book descriptions for the flyleaf of a book. They don’t even get credit for writing the summary. At least I don’t remember seeing anyone’s name.

I am amazed at how well these writers can create a “brief” teaser of what the book is about. I aspire to be able to do that in the future.

9th Judgement by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro is a book that we recently shared from Hachette Audio. After completing the story, I went back to the summary description: Detective Linsay Boxer chases a jewel thief, a murderous movie star, and a killer with a vendetta against women and children. Wow! You can’t get much more succinct than that. That in a nutshell is the summary of the book.

The writer of the summary goes on to expand that statement a little with three short paragraphs that tell the story without the details.

We highly recommend 9th Judgement by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. I will continue my quest to improve my writing using fewer words. I am open to any words of advice you may have.

Build A Bear

Last Saturday was girls day out. All of the Brogan ladies, Katrina, Violette, Tracey, Cindy and I went on an adventure. First we went to Build A Bear where Isabel and Dancey were born. The girls had so much fun choosing the cuddly little one they would take home. You can see some of this experience in the video.

Then we went to lunch at Ruby Tuesday’s. After a delicious lunch we went to the Grand Opening of Hobby Lobby in Manchester NH.

It was a great day. I am blessed.

Echo Park – Book Review

Michael Connelly is one of the authors we read. That means that whenever he writes a new book, we automatically pick up the newest offering. We know it will be a good book. Good sometimes means interesting as in the case of Echo Park.

Echo Park is the story of a serial killer. Harry Bosch is an older detective who thinks his way through the case to find the killer. Sharing the thinking of Harry Bosch is the most interesting part of the case.

We hope you check out Michael Connelly for a good read.

There always is a better way …

SAN FRANCISCO - APRIL 22: An Apple store work...

Image by Getty Images via @daylife

The more times we do a certain task, the more we can get accustomed to doing it in the same way.

Sometimes this can result in a total log jam.

Diane’s Apple MacBook Pro is the computer we use to edit our videos using iMovie. We also use this same computer for storing photos in iPhoto.

This week we had to take the MacBook Pro in for service and ended up having to leave the machine at the Apple Store.

As a result of that happening, we learned many things.

1. Never do all your computing on one computer – a single point of failure wipes you out.

2. Always have a spare log on with full Admin rights and a password for the Repair Store to use.

3. Always change the log on you gave the Repair Store after you get the computer back.

4. Always have another method to process videos when iMovie is not available.

5. Always store your pictures in more than one place or on the cloud (internet accessible).

6. Always have at least 5 posts completed and scheduled. (This should be number 1, actually).

Had we done at least the above, we would have been more apt to post on Wednesday and Thursday or until we got back our primary machine.

We did have access to our blog website but we did not want to just throw up anything to fill the void until our trusty MacBook Pro was in our hands.

Gas Buddy Reviewed

Service station

Image via Wikipedia

We had reviewed some of Pop’s favorite APPs in prior posts but with gas prices higher than in previous years it is worth talking about Gas Buddy one more time.

This APP is available for free for Android Phones, iPhones and even for iPads.

You do not even need to register or create a profile to get results.  If you don’t allow your cell phone to use your current location, you can enter the zip code of your current location to obtain results of the lowest gas prices nearest you.

After the results are displayed, you can sort them by distance from you or by the lowest price.

You can choose to view regular gas, midgrade gas, premium gas or diesel.  You can display a map showing the locations of the different gas stations based on the prices.

You can create a profile making it easier for the APP to help find you the closest station with the lowest prices.

You even can earn points and enter contests to win gas cards. Some of the ways you earn points are listed below:

150    Post/Update A Gasoline Price
100    Vote In The Weekly Opinion Poll
80    Use The Tell-a-Friend Feature
20    Post a Message In The Message Forum
25    Read a Recent News Item
100    Becoming a Member

One of the ways I win is by buying my gas at the lowest prices. Of course sometimes I tend to go out of my way to get the lowest prices.

Diane says I am likely to drive more miles to save a few pennies per gallon than I probably should. But you know what they say!  #winning

Father’s Day Poker

Father’s Day was different this year in that it is the first time we did not spend time with at least one of our sons. Steve is a great husband and an outstanding father.  In addition to the card and small gift I had for him, I want to do something to make the day special. After some thinking, I invited him to breakfast at a restaurant we had been thinking about trying. To fill out the day, I asked if he would like to go to The Poker Room New Hampshire to try his luck at the tables. Being an avid poker player, he was pleased with the invitation.

You can read his account of the day over at DadsPokerBlog.com. You will notice we remember the day a little differently.

It is true that I would rather put a $20 bill into a change machine and get back $20 in change. Aside from that fact, I do enjoy poker. We used to play family poker just about every Saturday night with Steve’s parents and his aunt and uncle along with various guests who used to stop by. We played Jacks or Better to Open; Deuces Wild; Woolworth’s – where 5 and 10’s are wild; along with a plethora of other games. That was before Texas Holdem became popular and taken the country by storm. Important to note: No matter how wild I played, I never lost more than $20 a session and we had so much fun.

If I knew how to make the connections, I would have a Saturday night poker game at our house every week. A player could buy chips for a nominal fee, have fun and not go broke in the deal. It would just be good fun.

The Poker Room in Hampton Falls, NH is a nice place. The staff is great, the facilities are nice and most all of the players are nice. When I play poker, I expect to loose all of my money. I call it entertainment money. Actually it costs less than going to a concert.

Steve is a very serious poker player. He has tons of books on the subject and gets Card Player magazine. Sometimes he plays on line poker while we watch high stakes poker on TV. He is a devotee of the game. He knows all of the rules and guidelines. He knows how poker is supposed to be played. I am sure all of his knowledge would be beneficial if he played with professional players.

Poker reminds me of chess, they both have guidelines. If player A does thus and such, I am supposed to play in a certain manner. Unfortunately, I don’t know all of the guidelines and I just play for fun. Sometimes there are comments made, but I never break any “rules.” Don’t forget to check out Steve’s account of this story on DadsPokerBlog.

The most important part of Father’s Day Poker was that Steve had a good time playing and we had a successful Father’s Day celebration. How did you celebrate?

Great Shoes with Kitty Cat Approval

On June 3, 2011 you learned all about my new red shoes from Johnston & Murphy. I let you know they are classy looking, luxuriously soft sheepskin and they wear well.

The most important fact about these shoes is the exceptional fit. When I stepped into the shoes, I was immediately impressed. They fit perfectly. Until now, I have never experienced a perfect fit right out of the box.

The shoes are so soft they caress my feet with gentle support. I have worn them every day for the past 21 days. They are like wearing slippers that hold their shape, yet feel as good as the first day I put them on. THESE SHOES ARE EXCEPTIONAL!!!

Having a somewhat skeptic nature, I wondered for many days if the great fit of these shoes was a standard for Johnston & Murphy or was I just lucky to get a perfect pair of red shoes. Naturally I had to buy another pair to see if the second pair would have the same excellent fit. The answer is YES! My new black shoes have the same great fit and are as comfortable as the red shoes. I am happy.

Get your shoes before June 30, 2011 and get 15% off by using Discount Code BROGSHOE.

To get all the specifications you can go to the Johnson & Murphy website: http://www.johnstonmurphy.com/category_listing.aspx?c=1479
