You say loofah, I say luffa

We recently visited Tarpon Springs, Florida where we learned a lot about sponges. We learned that Loofa, also spelled Luffa, is actually a vegetable.

You can see a picture of a luffa on the vine at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luffa. The write-up says:

The luffa, loofah, or lufah (from Arabic لوف) are tropical and subtropical vines comprising the genus Luffa, the only genus of the subtribe Luffinae of the plant family Cucurbitaceae. The fruit of at least two species, Luffa acutangula and Luffa aegyptiaca (Luffa cylindrica), is grown, harvested before maturity, and eaten as a vegetable, popular in Asia and Africa.

The ripe, dried fruit is also the source of the loofah or plant sponge. Luffas are also used to make the soles of beach sandals.

Luffa species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species, including Hypercompe albicornis.

Parts of the plant are used to create bath or kitchen sponges, a natural remedy for jaundice, furniture and even houses. It is also eaten as a green vegetable.

Cate Colgan aka @CateTV

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Cate Colgan at her home in Clearwater, FL. Cate is energetic, fun and has a heart as big as all outdoors. We had a scrumptious lunch prepared by Cate and her partner Marty Seyler. Cate generously invited Sandy McKenna from MidlifeRoadTrip.tv to join us for lunch – just because she thought we would enjoy meeting Sandy – and we did.

Cate is so interesting we could do a whole month of videos with her. To give you a flavor of who she is, we are sharing Cate’s story about what Epic Thanks means.

A very special thank you to Cate Colgan for her kindness and generous hospitality.

Rescue: A Novel – Review

Diane and I have recently finished listening to “Rescue: A Novel” written by Anita Shreve and read by Dennis Holland. The audio book is distributed by Hachette Audio.

The story was both telling and touching and we highly recommend that you give it a listen.

A one legged bird

With coffee in hand, we sat down at an outdoor table at Sea World in warm, sunny Orlando, Florida. We noticed a black bird on the fence. He had only one leg, but he was perfectly balanced. We looked at him very carefully thinking he had one leg tucked into his feathers, but no, there was only one leg. We chatted about the strength of the bird and how difficult it must be to have only one leg. This bird was living our motto “You Can Do It If You Try.”

After coffee, we went to the dolphin show here at Sea World. It was amazing to see the dolphins gracefully jump in the air and then glide back into the water. More awesome than that was the water ballet created by people dressed in bird costumes flying through the air on wires. On cue, real live birds flew into the scene to become part of the ballet. Steve had a video camera and so did I. We filmed this spectacular event to share with you, but alas it didn’t work out “this time.” We need to learn more about video taping so that “next time” we can capture the picture we want. We recommend you take in the dolphin show if you visit Sea World.

Epilogue – After raising our emotions to their summit, the bird hopped down on the ground and walked away on two legs.

Have a great day.

Hell’s Corner – A Book Review

David Baldacci is one of our favorite authors. That is because he is writes excellent, exciting, suspenseful books like “Hell’s Corner.” I guessed and reasoned and came out with the wrong answer several times. The ending is incredible and most surprising. We highly recommend this outstanding book.
